Oh my, I can’t count how many comments I have gotten on my style of layering in this Nigerian weather. They often tell me it is difficult to layer due to the Nigeria hot weather amidst others challenges.
I just want to clarify that I am not out of my mind (I promise hehehe). But, my style has always been daring and different.
Style to me is an expression of how I feel and most times it differs. Somedays I will be edgy and out of the box which I try to express through my fashion. And layering is a tool to express my style. But if it comes down to choosing between the Nigerian scorching heat and layering, best believe I am choosing LAYERING.
All you need to learn is the art of mastering. Hence, why I have curated these 4 tips that have been helpful for layering during my stay so far in Nigeria.
1. AVOID LAYERING TWO THICK CLOTHES TOGETHER:
A ratio balance of thick and light material should be the motto when layering for a hot weather. Most especially for the outer layer.
When shopping for outer clothes like jackets or blazers, pick those made of light material. So, the balance will be semi-light for the blazer and the shirt will then be very light.
This tip also works amazing for layering a jumpsuit or two t-shirts. All in all, always layer light under the thick material.
2. THE OUTER LAYER SHOULD BE EASY TO REMOVE:
This tip may not apply to jumpsuits but for layering two shirts or even blazer with a shirt; make sure the inner can be worn on its own in case of emergencies.
Always strive to choose the outer layer that is easy to remove.
3. DON’T MIX MORE THAN TWO COLORS OR PATTERNS:
The goal is to look sharp and avoid looking a hot mess. Therefore build your layers from two colors and patterns.
Choose opposing colors like black and white, yellow and black even red with white. Try to layer the colors to compliment one another. Furthermore, when it comes to layering, the simpler the better.
It also applies to the pattern you choose to layer. For instance, start off with including just one pattern like layering a white plain tee under a floral jumpsuit. This way, the floral pattern will stand out more and look clean.

4. BALANCE THE SHAPE OF THE CLOTHES:
The purpose of layering is to combine clothes in the most unique but crisp way. And layering two baggy clothes will not achieve that look.
Contrary to popular opinions, not everyone can wear baggy clothes but you can still pull it off. The tip is to make the inner layer fitted while the outer is baggy which creates a balanced harmony of layers.
And finally, check the mirror! Try to ask for the opinion of the people around you. Regardless, trust your intuition.
