Best Skincare Of 2018, idayat sanni

For today, I will be reviewing all the skincare products I bought in 2018. In 2018, it was a race to get the perfect skin. However, for someone with sensitive oily skin, it was mostly a miss. Buying skincare was more like I was going to war because it can either go extremely good or extremely bad.

Notwithstanding, despite all the trials, I still ended 2018 with a skincare routine. To know the products that made the cut, keep reading.

Cleansers: Black soap, COSRX Low pH Good Morning Cleanser, and Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Cleanser are the 3 cleansers I tried. I stopped using black soap because it made my skin feel so tight and more oily. If a cleanser that makes your skin feel squeaky clean after using it is actually dehydrating the skin thereby making it more oily.

The COSRX Low pH Good Morning Cleanser claimed to be gentle with a mildly acidic ph BUT I reacted to it. I later realized some of the ingredients; Cocamidopropyl betaine and sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate are solubles derived from coconut and coconut break me out. The research here and here

So what was the best of skincare cleanser of 2018? it was the Neutrogena hydro boost cleanser. The cleanser was easy on my skin, hydrating, it didn’t make my skin feel squeaky clean and didn’t break me out.

Exfoliation: Does the name the ordinary, glycolic acid and lactic ring a bell, it should because they were popular on social media in 2018. They are chemical exfoliants that work to refine the skin texture. For an in-depth explanation check my Pinterest HERE.

Chemical exfoliants are amazing for treating hyperpigmentation, acne, blackheads and other skin care problems but you have to be careful when venturing into acid exfoliation. They can burn your skin in a matter of seconds, break you out and make your skin very sensitive to the sun so you have to get it right. you have to start small, have to know their use, know how to combine the acids, what acids you should not combine and know the number of times to use it.

For a beginners guide to chemical exfoliants, check my board on Pinterest HERE, I pin skincare information all the time, so follow to know more.

The best chemical exfoliant for me this year was the glycolic acid pads for sensitive skin from nip+fab and hyaluronic acid from nip+fab. They were gentle on my skin and cleared my whiteheads. I only use glycolic once a week and hyaluronic every day.

To use any exfoliants, it is advisable to start with once a week then when your skin is used to it, you can introduce twice a week.

Moisturizers: The first moisturizer I tried this year proved to be the perfect moisturizer. Neutrogena hydro boost water gel is my holy grail and my lover, it sinks in so well and doesn’t make me greasy/oily. It leaves my skin hydrated, hydrated skin is happy skin.

Toners: Toners told me to try again in 2019. I tried 2 toners in 2018 and it was a flop. Normally, Neutrogena alcohol-free and Neutrogena pore refining toner are good for sensitive skin but broke me out. I still don’t know why they did but, when I know I will post an update on my blog.

The last of best skincare of 2018 is the Cerave healing ointment cream. This cream is the best for healing any burns or rash. I apply it whenever I use any acid in order to prevent burns and breakouts.

Sunscreen: if you add any type of acid into your skincare routine it has to be followed with a sunscreen. In fact, as long as you own a face which we all do(if you do..nt..hmm) you must own a sunscreen.

The sunscreen should be SPF 30 for it to actually. if you think, well cant I combine SPF 5 and 25 to make it 30? No, you can’t. You can layer SPF but you can’t add it up.  SPF 5 and SPF 25 does not add up to SPF 30. For more on how to layer SPF click here.

I tried 2 sunscreens before settling on one. The first is the COSRX Aloe Soothing SPF50 sunscreen. COSRX sunscreen had a white tint, I could have managed it but it eventually broke me out.  The second is Neutrogena hydro boost SPF25, it has no tint and so far it has not broken me out.

However, I am still on the hunt for a suitable sunscreen that is SPF30 and above for sensitive skin. If you know any, let me know. I hope you enjoyed the post, please leave any skincare tips/product recommendations you have down below, i will really appreciate it. Don’t forget to subscribe

For sunscreen, I recently discovered a mineral sunscreen which is what my sensitive but oily skin tolerates. It’s a Nigerian brand formulated overseas ( skin 101 ultra sheer mineral sunscreen). Loving it so far; and it’s the only sunscreen I’ve adhered to consistently mainly because of ease of use ( it’s a spray) and the fact that it doesn’t make me greasy.

Another brand I would recommend is Coola.

Oh i have wanted to try coola, will check skin 101 and hopefully it works for me

Okay. I used to think I am the most curious with trying out skincare products. Funny how I was able to stick with Avila essential oils and black soap, but I eventually gave up on oils because it makes me all oily and stuff. The best I have had to lay my hands on is Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizer with Spf 15. I wish the Spf came up a bit because Aveeno is the plug. I currently make use of L.A Milk and Honey Scrub which was a bit harsh at first use but I wouldn’t mind a body and face scrub recommendation that isn’t acidic and all natural. Well, the Ghana black soap I got from Mama Tega cosmetics in Yaba does a lot compared to the Moroccan black soap I used earlier. In all, sorry for the very long read, I just love to engage when it comes to skincare.

Oh that’s great, unfortunately I realized my skin does not like natural products like honey scrub and all. I always break out, will pick up aveeno and hopefully it works out for me. The next products i want to try is more hydrating products which i hope does not break me out

    • January 10, 2019 / 8:57 pm

😂i wish mine was this simple 😂

I’m about to start using the ordinary products and I wish you spoke more about that. But i’ll Definitely read the detailed guide to Chemical exfoliants before I try. That neutrogena water boost cleanser is the ACTUAL PLUG! One of my best cleansers I’ve used. I use one Simple moisturizer with SPF 15, are you saying I’m gonna have to get another? Oh gosh 🤦🏾‍♀️
Did rosewater and glycerin break you out? Cause you didn’t speak about that. Anyways 2019 is my year of getting rid of spots. Did any of these products actually reduce that for you?

    • January 10, 2019 / 9:25 pm

I didn’t want to talk much on the ordinary Because i am still doing my research on it. That’s why i did a board on Pinterest for my explanation. Lol yeah it is best to get an spf 30 especially since you introducing chemical exfoliants. Yes the rosewater and glycerin broke me out. For spots i didn’t use anything in particular but I noticed glycolic acid helped a little so it’s best you check the best chemical exfoliant for reducing spots then buy it
