Things I wish I knew before attending Lagos fashion week

Hey guys, so I attended the just concluded Lagos fashion and can I just say it was a really good experience. Although there were some hiccups that I will soon get to, I still rate it 7/10.

I urge everyone to attend Lagos fashion week at least once especially if you are a blogger. If you are attending next year, keep reading for important review/advice. These tips will make you enjoy your next fashion week and have the best experience.

The slated time stated on the Lagos fashion week website for when the shows will start was 5-6. For my first day, I followed this time and got there by 6:30 but honestly, that was a great mistake on my part. I got there late, I couldn’t take good pictures, and I sat at the back.

I will advise anyone to endeavor to leave their house early. If coming from the island leave by 3 pm and earlier if you coming from the mainland. This means you can get there by 5 when there is still good light. Take pictures, seat and be ready

I ended up in VOGUE because I got there early, and struck my pose

So, I applied for the press pass which I got but I thought that guaranteed me a seat in the front or second row…hmm…NOP. It doesn’t even guarantee you seats in the third row, instead, you can only seat in the fourth-sixth row.

Although, If you really have the strength to stand, you can stay in the photographer’s section. However, this may mean you have to stand all through.

Also, a press pass can’t be used to enter backstage, and a backstage pass can’t be used to enter/watch the shows. If you really want to document both, either get both passes or an ALL ACCESS.

Furthermore, respectfully decline to be a seat filler for front row seats. Because you may still have to stand up and end up in the sixth row. Finally, come early, take your seat in the fourth row and enjoy the show.

The first step is to ensure you come dressed in your BEST CREATIVE OUTFIT. I achieved this by preparing my outfits like 8 months before the event. I knew I wanted to showcase Adire but in a very creative, diverse and unique way. My local tailor made all my outfits. Also, the pieces are from my new collection which is coming out soon. Follow it here and stay up to date on any news.

The second step is to pose where there are photographers. I noticed most won’t ask you to pose but they took pictures while I struck poses for my friend.

Also, very important advice is to give photographers your Instagram handle. I posed for any photographer that asked but I gave them my Instagram handle and told them to tag me when they post the pictures.

I met most bloggers I follow on Instagram at Lagos fashion week. For the first day, I was shy and really awkward but the second day, I walked up to some of them, introduced myself and told them what I loved about their Instagram page. This really helped kickstart our conversation and I got to know some of them really well.

Also, you may be asked what you do, and yes you can say you are a BLOGGER! but don’t forget to say your niche like ‘fashion blogger’, page and website. I noticed my followers increased as a result of networking. Every chance I got, I was mentioning my Instagram handle.

I won’t lie, I experienced some ‘discrimination/prejudice’. A lot of what is an HIJABI doing here, ‘do HIJABIS even know what fashion means’. Someone even thought my hijab was a COSTUME! and they mentioned it to me.

I won’t lie, I got really discouraged at one point, I didn’t even want to attend on the last day because of the looks. I had to write this caption on this post urging hijabis to apply for the next one because I need to see more people like me.

If not for the encouragement from my family and friends, I was ready to stay at home but I am glad I attended on the last day. I am glad I went for Lagos fashion week, I am glad I represented well, I am glad people loved my outfits, I am glad I was featured in international magazines, I am glad for the support and love my Instagram family showed me and I am always glad for people who tell me to keep going.

Finally, I encourage everyone to go for Lagos fashion week next year but start preparing your outfits, accommodation and even transportation NOW.

I hope you guys enjoyed this post and learned something. Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram here, share this post and LEAVE A COMMENT.
